When I was on my internships I’ve learned that projects are kind of different to those you do at a design school. At a school you have much more freedom you don’t have a client who prescribes you what he wants. On the creativebloq I’ve found an article about those things you don’t learn in a design school.
You have to be aware that you don’t just get a job in the design market just because you have got a diploma. It is more important to show good projects, a good portfolio and to have a good personality. So try to collect much experience as possible during your studies. I always try to get internships during my summer holidays.
Another thing is that you don’t really get much education in the software. You maybe learn the basics but you have to learn most of the software skills by yourself during projects. I think it is totally comprehensible that the design school can’t teach you the whole software skills.
You have to understand the real-world process. The most important thing is to see the part of implementation because in a design school you often have to implement just some parts or in a cheaper way than you would in real life.
You have to get the commercial knowledge. We often get told that we shouldn’t work commercial more in an artistic way. However when you have a client you have to think about his needs and what he wants his project to look like. Your job is to do the best you can for your client and not for your portfolio.
It is really important that you never stop learning. When you want to stay creative you should hang onto the innate useful creative spirit of youth.
Focus on something you like to do or where you are good at but don’t try to be all things to all people.
I think it is a really good preparation to read this article for the internship in the fifth semester. It is important to see how it behaves on the design market and working with a client.
